The customer is always right.
- Harry Gordon Selfridge/Marshall Field
This well-known expression dates back to the early 1900s and is attributed to either Harry Gordon Selfridge or Marshall Field, both of whom founded major department store chains. The customer is always right
was inspired by the French slogan, Le client n'a jamais tort
(The customer is never wrong
), penned in 1908 by the famous French hotelier, César Ritz. Businesses of all types generally try to follow this old adage for obvious reasons, although in some cases, this may be easier said than done.
