It ain't over until the fat lady sings. - Dan Cook/Southern proverb
The above expression dates back to at least the late 1970s when the sportswriter Dan Cook said
the opera ain't over till the fat lady sings. It may possibly be older as there is also a Southern proverb worded in a very simiar way:
the carnival isn't over until the fat lady sings. Many attribute this saying to Yogi Berra, but what he actually said was
it ain't over till it's over.
It ain't over until the fat lady sings conjures up an image of a grossly overweight opera singer, the Wagnerian opera heroine, Brünhilde, who belts out an aria wearing horns and a breast plate. Her final aria marks the end of the opera. Her voice is so shrill that it could shatter glass.
Well, we say that
it ain't over until the fat lady shatters the glass ceiling. Although women have come a long way in the workplace, men continue to hold most leadership roles, and women still face certain obstacles when it comes to attaining the highest ranked positions in industry and government.
