A motival poster is sometimes called de-motivational. What do you really need today, motivation or de-motivation? Could a little laughter be just what you need?
Today and every day, starting out with a smile and a laugh will make things better. Hang a funny poster over your office copier or fax machine. See what it does for your co-workers.
A picture of a cat lying on a fax machine with the lid partially closed is a good one. The caption underneath reads, No matter how hard you try, it is impossible to fax a cat.
Are you or the people around you depressed, lonely or in pain? There's a new treatment called humor or laughter therapy. In a study conducted at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, researchers found that humor therapy decreased pain and increased "life satisfaction." 36 nursing home residents participated in the study. At the end of the program, they were happier, more satisfied with their lives and less lonely. Their chronic pains were reduced as well. Didn't someone say that laughter is the best medicine?
Many of our modern drugs are accompanied by unwanted side effects. Anti-depressants make many people feel numb. Maybe it would be a good idea to try looking at some motival posters before turning to drugs. The researchers in Hong Kong recommended that healthcare professionals incorporate humor into their patient care, which makes sense.
In 2006, Montreal General Hospital created a model that doctors could use to introduce humor into their daily encounters with patients. Wouldn't you prefer to see a doctor that cracks jokes rather than one that looks grim and serious all the time?
Some people might feel that their health problems are not being taken seriously. Maybe the doctors could try playing funny videos in the waiting room, rather than leaving the TV on a news channel. Maybe they could try hanging some motival posters on their walls, rather than the typical pastel flowers. Pastels such as light green are supposed to make people feel relaxed and comfortable, but many people don't look very comfortable sitting in the waiting room of a doctor's office.
Life is full of unpleasant experiences. We need fun and laughter to counteract the effects of those things in our bodies.
Try smiling at a motival poster the next time you have a headache. If it's a tension headache, the simple act of smiling will help to relieve the pressure.
